We stayed here at Ajo Heights RV Park.
In the town center there are a couple of beautiful historic Spanish missions that surround the town plaza.
Just south of town there is a 10 mile scenic loop that we drove that represents a lot of the surrounding Sonoran desert. We were less than a half mile into the scenic loop when we came across this warning sign.
We were a little concerned but decided to drive the rest of the scenic loop.
Believe it or not Sue kept wanting to stop and go off hiking. I could barely keep up with her. She actually went hiked up this hill twice.
We were told to just keep a watch out for rattle snakes and scorpions. We did not see any which we were really glad about. Later we were told that it is still a little cool at night for them to be making much of a prescence at this time of year. Yay!
I know some of our past blog posts have shown photos of cactus and we are amazed at all the different kinds of cactus that there are. Here are some more teddy bear cholla that I thought looked neat being back lit. The needles appear to glow.
We stopped the truck an got out to explore and here is Sue is pointing out an Organ Pipe cactus we ran across. We will see many more of these when we head over to Organ Pipe National Monument on our next stop.
We are still amazed at how tall some of these cactus get.
We also came across the Darby Well cemetery used by some of the locals and nearby Indian tribe.
Scenic overlook at part of the town of Ajo.

Yikes, glad you didn't see any smuggling going on :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a different winter for you guys! And those are some huge cacti.
