After arriving at Alpine Texas we stayed 3 nights at the Lost Alaskan RV Park. We were in close proximity to the Fort Davis National Park and McDonalds Observatory so we took a day trip to visit both. We also took an evening trip to see the nearby Marfa lights. You can read our blog entry about that adventure.
We spent the morning here exploring this fort. From the National Park Service Web site: Fort Davis is one of the best surviving examples of an Indian Wars' frontier military post in the Southwest. From 1854 to 1891, Fort Davis was strategically located to protect emigrants, mail coaches, and freight wagons on the Trans-Pecos portion of the San Antonio-El Paso Road and on the Chihuahua Trail.
It was a little cool, breezy and overcast so we had to wear coats in the morning.
We then ate lunch on a winding road as we drove up to see the McDonalds Observatory. You can watch a Youtube video on the observatory called "Brain Motor" here.
We went into the visitor center and paid to watch an hour long show called "Live Solar viewing" with an astronomer to see a live viewing of the Sun through one one of the telescopes here at the observatory.
We actually saw and learned about Sun spots, solar prominence and solar flares. The sun was very active for our viewing.
The observatory visitor center is down below the telescopes.
We had a great time and learned a lot about our Sun.
